Breast Reduction

While many women enlarge their breasts for cosmetic enhancement, there are those who suffer from the problem of having oversized breasts that can be both painful and embarrassing. In an effort to make their breasts more proportional to the rest of their body and eliminate the negative side effects, increasing numbers of women are seeking breast reduction surgery. At Mancoll Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery, Dr. John S. Mancoll, a board-certified plastic surgeon, has a keen eye and strong understanding of the breast reduction procedure.

A breast reduction can help relieve many problems, including:

  • Shoulder, neck, and back pain
  • Excessive sagging or drooping of the breasts
  • Bra strap digging into the shoulders
  • Breathing problems
  • Hand numbness
  • Self-consciousness

Ideal Candidates

Ideal candidates for breast reduction are women who experience physical pain due to having oversized breasts. Women cannot be pregnant or breastfeedingwhen undergoing this procedure. Dr. Mancoll commonly performs breast reduction surgery on individuals ranging from their late teens through their 70s.

Procedure

In Dr. Mancoll’s practice, 60% of his patients come to him specifically for breast surgery. He gets excellent results because he utilizes many different surgical techniques to meet the needs of his many different patients. No one technique meets everyone’s needs. However, in general most patients will experience a very similar process. By creating an incision that circles the areola (the dark colored skin surrounding the nipple) and extends downward following the natural curve of the breast, excess glandular tissue and fat can be removed while excising excess skin. The nipple and areola are moved to a new position and breast skin is reshaped around the areola, achieving a newly contoured breast. Although this is considered a reconstructive procedure, the additional goal is not just to make a woman physically feel better but also to help her emotionally feel better. During your consultation, Dr. Mancoll will discuss with you which technique will best suit your condition.

Costs

There are several factors that determine the total cost of breast reduction surgery, including:

  • Facility fees
  • Anesthesia fees
  • Surgical fees
  • Prescriptions for medication
  • Post-surgery garments

Most breast reduction surgery is covered by insurance. Our surgical coordinator will be happy to assist you in getting insurance approval.

Potential Risks and Complications

As with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks associated with a breast reduction procedure, such as scars, infection, bleeding, asymmetries, postoperative discomfort, and adverse reaction to anesthesia. Although significant complications are uncommon, patients should understand that any surgery, performed for any reason, has risks and should not be taken lightly.

Dr. Mancoll prides himself on his ability to communicate with his patients and tailors each discussion to the patient’s individual needs. Dr. Mancoll and his staff will spend time helping you understand your procedure. You should feel free to ask questions at any time, and if you don’t understand the information, we will be more than happy to go over it again.

Recovery

Following surgery, patients generally have soreness, swelling, and bruising that can last up to 6 weeks. Strenuous activities should be avoided for 6 weeks. Scars will become less noticeable over time and may take up to a year to flatten and fade.

Results

After the breast reduction procedure is performed, Dr. Mancoll has found that his patients experience improvement not only in their appearance, but also in their overall outlook on life. The results of your breast reduction will be permanent, but the size of your breasts may change with weight gain or pregnancy.
